About Chopin, the Mazurka & Henry Kelder
Chopin used the mazurka — a Polish dance in triple meter — as both an artistic vehicle and a means to remain connected with his homeland after settling in Paris at the age of twenty. He composed his first Mazurka at only nine years old (1820) and his final one just before his death in 1849, making the mazurka both his musical beginning and his farewell.
Henry Kelder, himself a composer and educator, shares his personal link to Chopin through his own teachers and travels to Paris and Warsaw. During the evening, he will introduce the different types of Mazurkas, discuss Chopin’s life in words and images, and explore how to listen to these miniatures — each one a poetic world in itself.
“Chopin is one of the greatest composers of all time and the founder of modern pianism.
His works remain unparalleled in inventiveness, harmonic richness, and expressive depth.
When you hear Chopin, you feel his emotion still alive. I aim to recreate that connection this evening.”
– Henry Kelder
